Whats Soft Modding?
Soft Modding basically gives you the same result as getting your xbox chipped, it allows you to run unsigned software on your xbox - which in turn lets you change the bios and access the contents of the hard-disk.

so you can run emulators, backup your games to the hard-disc, change your xbox region, enable HDTV or just turn it into a linux box :D

Whats Required to SoftMod:
Spare Xbox Joypad (doesn't have to be official)
PC (with USB socket/Network abilites)
a memory card (doesn't have to be official)
And a copy of one of the following:
007: Agent Under Fire
Splinter Cell (original, not the classics re-release)
Mechassault (original, not the classics re-release)

You can pick up the games pre-owned for 5.99 in Gamestation, and unofficial memory cards on ebay go for about the same price.

It's cheaper and less hasle than getting a machined chipped, and because its a software solution you can do it to multiple xbox's for the same downlay.

Save Game Exploit

The first step to getting your xbox soft modded, is getting it to run unsigned code.

Basically in the three above games, the save game loading doesn't check for buffer-overflows - so with a crafty savegame on your xbox, you can simply load that savegame via the game and volla, the xbox loads for a few seconds and your running 'Evolution X' (a front-end, from which you can run apps, games and FTP into your xbox).

The neat thing is, because you then have access to the hard-disk via your PC (network cable and FTP software), you can then go and replace the default xbox dashboard with the evolution-x software, so it boots straight into it without the need of the game.

Getting The 'Crafty Savegame' Onto the Xbox
The hardest part is how to get a dodgy savegame onto your xbox, and the answer is pretty blunt: make your xbox pad PC compatible.

sounds like a pain in the ***, but as the xbox pad's are USB with a different end attached to it, its simply a case of cutting the xbox joypad wire in half, getting a wire with a USB adaptor on the end, and connecting them together.

a USB cable has 4 coloured wires inside, so its just a case of matching them up and then using some celotape. (a 10 minute job)

Once you've made your funky USB Xbox pad, do a google for XBCD which will result in some home written drivers to allow the xbox pad to work on the PC.

If you want to just have PC compatible Xbox pad, you can stop here.

Once you've got the joypad working, we need to get the memory card working - thankfully the action replay chaps have already written some software to copy data onto the memory card, and even if you have not purchased the action replay, you can download the "client" from the website.

So, once you have the client (XBOXAT_EUsetup1_31.zip) installed, plug the memory card into the joypad (while its connected to the PC)

New Hardware Found! What Driver?

If you go to where the action replay has installed itself, you'll notice a 'drivers' subfolder, just select that and click ok.

Now load the action replay software, grab the 'crafty savegame' which will be in a .zip format, and drag it onto the memory card for it to copy across.

IF you know somebody who has a chipped xbox already, he can put the file on the memory-card for you.

i dont think the 1.6 or 1.6b can be soft modded as the bios is not flashable so you need a earlier xbox (you see them popping up cheap due to the 360 being released)

if you use the splinter cell method you need to buy the original version not the platinum release as its been patched to stop the soft mod....baz
